The cost savings below are estimated for one spray booth for one year. The main potential for savings is in labour costs.
The two Zippmask clients interviewed estimated that Zippmask can save 2 – 10 minutes per job compared to applying plastic wrap. The savings depend on the type of job, but are generally due to convenience:
The fact that Zippmask is in one piece, whereas 2 – 3 pieces of plastic may need to be applied.
Spray ingress can occur under the edges of the plastic but this does not occur with Zippmask.
The masking tape often sticks to the thin plastic film where not needed during application and has to be removed. This problem does not arise with the heavier Zippmask.
Assuming that a spray booth has a through-put of at 20 jobs per week (1000 jobs per year), this represents time savings of up to 30 - 150 hours.
At a rate of $30 per hour, Zippmask can save $1000 - $4500 per year in labour.
120 rolls of plastic wrap @ 14.60 per roll* = $1750
Retail cost of Zippmask = $398
Net materials savings = $1352
The plastic waste is bulky and comprises about 1/8 of the total landfill waste from paint shops. A medium sized paint shop with 3 spray booths fills 4 * 4.5 cu m skips for landfill per month. Each bin costs $50 for each pick-up and $19 per month to hire. From this, it is estimated that 6 skip pick-ups would be saved each year, or 2 per spray booth ($100). Larger shops may also avoid hire of one bin thus saving another $80 per spray booth per year.
Net waste disposal savings $100 - $180
Total $ savings per spray booth year from changing from plastic film to the Zippmask system were estimated to be:
Labour $1,000 to $4,500
Materials $1,352
Waste disposal $150
Total savings per spray booth year approx. $2400 - $5,900
